On the topic of Equity & Equality
Shifting the debate

The purpose of school is to prepare students with the skills and resilience to learn, adapt, and make their creative mark in a complex and ever-changing world.
When it comes to policy, Equal opportunity is non-controversial. It means providing every child with access to the same programs — Such as Reading, AP, IB, or CTE — across all schools, with comparable funding per student and equal access to qualified teachers and labs.
To me, equity means every student feels invested in the system — seen, supported, and hopeful. It means adapting teaching to different learning styles and encouraging unique talents in the trades, arts, or sciences, and more.
Equal outcomes for each student are impossible to achieve. Every child starts from different conditions and makes their own choices. That's how life works! However, we can strive for more equitable outcomes in the aggregate — ensuring that no school or area of the district consistently lags behind others in average test scores or student satisfaction. We should track student satisfaction by demographic and address any significant downward outliers, so no group is left behind or neglected.
